This session will explain how the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD of 32,000 students is able to operate 8 literacy parent community centers in neighborhoods, in collaboration with a college, and an education service center.

Impacting Reading Proficiency with Read Dads Read
Read Dads Read (RDR) is designed to impact 3rd grade proficiency in low income communities by engaging barbershops and eventually schools and churches. RDR is aimed at elementary and middle school aged children (K-8) and their fathers/male caregivers by utilizing a two generational approach of engaging fathers and their children. Attendees will learn how to use the community to advance reading activities and improve reading outcomes.

Building Literacy Skills in Children with Autism
Reading can be frustrating for children with autism, as well as frustrating for their parents and teachers. Learn four must-use strategies that reduce frustration and create an enjoyable and positive experience for everyone. Attendees will be better equipped with creative ideas to build and promote literacy skills in children with autism.

Using Wonder to Inspire Young Poets
Attendees will learn how writing fueled by wonder promotes student engagement. Using wonderopolis.org is a great way to pique student curiosity and create purpose for writing poetry. Student examples will be used to model how writing can be lifted to a new level when wonder is used as the basis.

Games to Engage Multi-level ESOL Learners
Dorcas International’s family literacy team uses games and interactive lessons to engage multi-level ESOL learners in the classroom, as well as during Parent and Child Together (PACT) Time® activities with youth participants. Attendees will engage in hands-on activities during this workshop and leave this session with activities to implement in their own programs.

Community Building in Adult Education
We all work, learn, and live together better when we know, care about, and cooperate with one another. Learn about and participate in community building activities that can become a part of your adult education classroom practices and that parents can also share with their families.
